Delta Dental teams with Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl’s

NASHVILLE, Tenn., (Nov. 20, 2009) – In an effort to help protect the teeth and health of Tennessee's young athletes while supporting one of Nashville’s premier events, Delta Dental of Tennessee donated more than 14,000 mouth guards to youth football players across the state.


As the official dental partner of the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl’s Youth Football Program, Delta Dental’s sponsorship provides financial support for contributions made to leagues across Middle Tennessee and helps offset the cost of more than 2,000 lower level seats for the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl donated to league winners.


“We are excited to have the support of Delta Dental of Tennessee as a sponsor of the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl and look forward to partnering with them to promote proper dental care at athletic events while providing Youth Football Program participants with the equipment, financial support and opportunities that significantly enhance their experience,” said Scott Ramsey, president and CEO of the Bowl.


The Bowl’s Youth Football Program was founded in 2003 to positively impact regional youth football leagues by providing financial support, tangible benefits and unique experiences to participants.   


According to the American Dental Association, athletes are 60 times more likely to suffer harm to the teeth when not wearing a mouth guard. The ADA estimates 200,000 oral injuries are prevented annually by wearing mouth guards.


"Mouth guards are essential for protecting athletes from traumatic injuries to the mouth and face,” said Dr. Phil Wenk, D.D.S., president and CEO of Delta Dental of Tennessee. “Not only do they prevent chipped or broken teeth, they can also protect against concussions."


Delta Dental provided "boil-and-bite" mouth guards, which are boiled in hot water and molded to the individual's mouth. Athletes can also purchase stock mouth guards, which come in a pre-formed shape, or order custom-made mouth guards from their dentist.


"Kids love the game, but it can be hard on parents to replace the player's equipment every year," said Joe Guy, commissioner of the Central Knights Youth Football league in Etowah, Tenn. "We really appreciate what Delta Dental is doing to protect the players' teeth and help them play the game they love."
