Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl continues partnership with Delta Dental of Tennessee to help protect young athletes

More than 23,000 youth program participants through the region receive mouth guards each year

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 30, 2013) – As the official dental partner of the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl’s Youth Football Program, Delta Dental of Tennessee has continued to provide financial support for contributions made to youth football leagues across Middle Tennessee.

During the last five years, Delta Dental has donated more than 50,000 total mouth guards to youth football players across the state, helping prevent dental injuries to Tennessee’s young athletes. Delta Dental’s sponsorship of the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl has also helped offset the cost of nearly 4,000 lower level seats for the Bowl game donated to league winners each year.

“The support we have received during the past five years from Delta Dental of Tennessee for our Youth Football Program has been tremendous,” said Scott Ramsey, President and CEO, Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl. “Safety of our Youth Football Program participants is a top priority and the mouth guards donated by Delta Dental help prevent concussions and other dental injuries. Together, we proudly promote proper dental care and provide a safe environment for league participants.”

The Bowl’s Youth Football Program was founded in 2003 to positively impact regional youth football leagues by providing financial support, tangible benefits and unique experiences to participants.

According to the American Dental Association, athletes are 60 times more likely to suffer harm to the teeth when not wearing a mouth guard. The ADA estimates 200,000 oral injuries are prevented annually by wearing mouth guards.

“Sports and recreation can lead to dental injuries, and mouth guards are essential for protecting athletes from injuries to the mouth and face,” said Phil Wenk, D.D.S., president and CEO, Delta Dental of Tennessee.

In addition to the Youth Football Program, Delta Dental has distributed nearly 30,000 mouth guards to inline and ice hockey youth athletes in conjunction with the Nashville Predators. Delta Dental provided "boil-and-bite" mouth guards, which are boiled in hot water and molded to the individual's mouth. Athletes can also purchase stock mouth guards, which come in a pre-formed shape, or order custom-made mouth guards from their dentist.
